Week of 6/5 -
6/11
| Light to
moderate tradewinds kept these islands of paradise warm and welcome, and the fishing was
pretty good. The predominant catch in terms
of numbers clearly has shifted from the Mahimahi to the Ono, and there have been some
great catches of large fish as well. The
tunas havent come in great numbers yet, and the Ahi Fever in Waianae reflected this
fact. However, when fish in the 600 and 700
pound range come in, you really cant complain too much. Oahu
The Ahi Fever
Tournament produced a good punch of big Billfish, with over several coming in over 200
pounds. Catches of 739, 652, 523, 452, 392,
and 239 made up the list of big fish in a tournament where most of the anglers truly
target Ahi, and seeing results like this are encouraging to the billfish fans. The largest Ahi came in at 183.8 pounds, and
second was just over 170. Though the weight
was good, the volume wasnt keeping the Ahi fans happy.
The SFH charter
boats reported some decent South Shore activity with Sea Verse catching
some Mahimahi and Ono each day, Magic picking up some Mahimahi and Aku,
and Wild Bunch doing much the same.
Kona
Tunas HAVE come
into Kona, and some of the boats are having excellent days with fish coming in well over a
hundred pounds. Pamela, Spellbound,
and Fish Wish all reported some good action in the porpoise schools up
and down the coast from Kawaihae to Red Hill and even Milolii. Fish Wish even had a day where they found a fish
holder and picked up 19 Mahimahi, 2 Ono, a Spearfish, a couple of Shibi and some Aku for
the huge clean sweep.
Kauai
Steady and
solid production has come in from the Kai Bear/Grander gang, with only
one skunk day each this week. Each day has
produced 2-5 Mahimahi, an Ono or two, and a few Aku as well. Lahela also picked up Mahimahi
and Ono each day they ran, and even found one Bull Mahi at 48 pounds!
Maui
Start
Me Up reported about 9 or 10 Ono for the week to go along with a few Mahimahi,
with Hinatea having a similar week.
Hinatea also lost a large tuna at the back of the boat, suggesting there
might be some good Ahi in the area as well. |
Week of 5/29 -
6/4
| High pressure just North of the islands has
maintained beautiful conditions, but usually when the weather is that stable the fishing
slows a bit. This week had some highights on some individual boats, but overall the bite
has been dominated by Mahimahi and Ono. Tuna is definitely here but still finicky, and the
Marlin are coming in a little spotty. Kona
Fish Wish
led the fleet this week with the Ahi bite, and threw in a released Blue Marlin to boot.
Kent brought in a total of four Ahi from 110.5 pounds to 139 pounds, and also
picked up a Spearfish, a 22 pound Aku, and had several others on making for a very
exciting week. Spellbound released a 110 pound Blue on Sunday to go with a
week of a few Mahimahi and captain Mike also picked up a nice 110 pound Ahi. Medusa
got Ono off a couple of trips as Grand Slam continues re-powering.
Fishing has
taken place off the Grounds, Red Hill, and VV buoy. We also got a report of a boat
bringing in a 639 pound fish on Saturday, but we were unable to obtain any further
details.
Maui
Mahimahi and
Ono dominated the harbor in Lahaina for the week with all boats reporting several
greenbacks and silver bullets. Hinateas 52 pounder led the way, with
several more off the North shore of Molokai later in the week. Start Me Up
released an estimated 125 Striped Marlin to add to their Mahimahi and Ono counts for the
week, meanwhile, Hookela tried the shores of Eastern Molokai for a good run of Ono
and some Mahi.
Marlin
Mischief, Sportfish Hawaiis latest addition to the fleet, tagged a couple of
Spears to go with their dose of Ono and Mahimahi.
Because the
weather has been so nice, Maui boats have scattered everywhere from the North Shore of
Molokai to the coasts of Kahoolawe.
Kauai
The best day
for Mahimahi was Monday, when Maka Hou picked up about 10 of the greenbacks. Lahela,
Kai Bear and Grander all picked up Mahimahi and Ono throughout the week as
well, with Lahela also reporting a 125 pound Blue on the 3rd. Good Aku
presence remains on most days, and the bite has been scattered all over, again as a result
of the good weather.
Oahu
Magic
led the way on the Ahi bite, with a 150 and a 160 on Sunday which went with their several
Mahimahi, Ono and Aku through the week. Sea Verse only ran a couple of trips
but still managed to pick up quite a few Mahimahi each day. Kamome found
quite a few Aku each day, and picked up a solid load of Mahimahi through the week. Wild
Bunch had no report as skipper Timmy Gray is currently enjoying a couple of days off,
and the Kuu remains down with her extensive re-powering project. |
