1999 Independence Day Fishing Tournament Report

The 1999 HYC/WYC Independence Day Fishing Tournament was held this year on July 10th and 11th rather than on the 4th of July weekend to hopefully gain more participation.  However, with the Transpac Yacht Race boats arriving in record time, some of our usual anglers were busy hosting the visiting boats.  Thus, we had a small fleet for this year's tournament.  The winning power boat was Chieme skippered by Steve Shoda with their 39.5 Mahi Mahi.  Chieme also brought in 4 other Mahi's from 12 lb to 22.5 lbs as well as a 19 lb Spearfish which they were so kind as to share with us for dinner!  It was delicious!  Second in the power fleet went to Kalei K skippered by Kurt Kamioka with their 27.5 lb Ono.

For the sailboats, Tiare was the only boat to weigh in, which wasn't surprising as they were one of only two sailboats that actually went out. A few other boats entered to keep their season's points eligibility, but they were unable to fish.  Nonetheless, Tiare won the sailboat division with their 14.5 lb Ono.  They also came home with an 11 lb Ulua, 2 Mahi's and an Uku.
