Eclipse
One of the longest running operations in Kona, Jack Ross was one of "the original 10" some 35 years ago, and he is still in business today. He tagged and released the first Marlin in Hawaii in 1968, and has won the Hawaii International Billfish Tournament twice and has placed second.
Jack's son Billy has also been a captain for 25 years and is a many time winner of the HIBT Richard Boone award, which is given to the skipper and boat that anglers in the tournament most prefer fishing on.
Their latest boat, Eclipse, is a self-built 37 footer built in 1990 using Airex core materials. One of the nicest features of the boat is the absence of diesel fumes, which is the result of the use of a fuel catalyst called Fitch that helps the fuel burn much cleaner. Also, as the photo shows, there is ample space to get out of the sun while continually receiving fresh air.
Jack considers their operation to be a fishing school and specializes in teaching the first time fisherman about the principles of drag and the correct use of fishing tackle. They are working on a patent for a reel drag stop system they designed which helps prevent backlash on the reels when a fish strikes, thus an angler could qualify for an IGFA world record on his or her very first catch. The skippers also encourage participation in the placing and recovery of the baits and tackle which further enhances the anglers' enjoyment of the trip as a complete educational experience.
| "We could not have had a more
thrilling time on our wonderful excursion with Bill and his mate, Dell, on our first deep
sea fishing experience. This adventure deserves more than a 5 rating in all of your
categories. We felt like old friends immediately after meeting each other. The boat was so
unique, especially since it was built by Bill's father - we're sure Bill had his hands in
on the construction too. We had super gear, including having aboard quite a sight to see -
none other than all of your own gear. We certainly stood in awe observing all the unusual
gear - quite different from small hooks and sinkers that we are accustomed to. Bill's
heart was all in to satisfying us in every way with his determination in us pulling in our
first blue marlin which caused us to stay out for an extra hour - but we did it!!! What an
ending to a glorious adventure!!!" Georganne & Dale, Hilton Head, SC |
