The Hoolea
2000 Fishing tournament, sponsored by CSX Lines (formerly Sealand), Jim Beam, Caterpillar,
Dekuyper, Budweiser, and Murphys Bar and Grille, has received 61 paid entries, and
more are coming in daily. Also committing
to the tournament are several additional sponsors including Penn Fishing Reels and Maui
Jim Sunglasses, whose contributions to tournament participants are magnificent. Hoolea
success has come from a resurgence in popularity in the past two years, with a renewed
attitude for fishing in a quality event along Oahus South Shore. With 77
entries in 1999, tournament organizers are expecting more for 2000, and encouraging
anglers to enter soon in order to ensure mooring at one of the clubs. Hoolea
2000 offers participants so many ways to win. In addition to paying an expected base
entry purse in excess of $35,000 over five places with an anticipated first prize of over
$15,000.00, Hoolea will pay $400.00 to the largest qualifying Marlin, Ahi,
Ono, Mahimahi, and Aku each day. Combining these cash prizes with the Penn rod and
reel combo, the many pairs of Maui Jim Sunglasses, and the free entries to the 2001 Ahi
Fever and Hana Paa tournaments, Hoolea will be giving out prizes well
into the evening at the banquet come labor day. Hoolea
2000 is the sixth stop on the Maui Jim Hawaii Marlin Series, a statewide series of
tournaments that will end up at a made-for-TV fish-off at South Point for the series
top five anglers. Points are earned by participation in tournaments all around the
state and additional points are earned by catching qualifying fish and/or placing in these
tournaments. The qualifying Kona tournaments include the Kona Classic (May 13 and
14), the Big Island Invitational (June 15, 16 and 17), the Firecracker Open (July 1 and
2), the Skins Marlin Derby (July 7, 8 and 9), the August Moon Billfish tournament (August
6 through 12), and the Okoe Bay Rendezvous (September 7 through 10). The qualifying
Maui tournament is the famous Lahaina Jackpot held the weekend before Halloween on
October 27, 28 and 29. The schedule is as follows: skippers meeting at 7:00 pm at
Waikiki Yacht Club on the 1st of September, fishing Saturday and Sunday the 2nd
and 3rd, awards banquet on Monday the 4th at the Hawaii Yacht Club
located in the ocean heart of Waikiki. For more information, please contact
